Cassy Fiano has an outstanding post at Hot Air that I find both political astute and very amusing:
If you ever needed an example of why feminism no longer speaks for the average American woman, then you need look no further than this story.
About two dozen women marched topless from Longfellow Square to Tommy’s Park this afternoon in an effort to erase what they see as a double standard on male and female nudity.
The women, preceded and followed by several hundred boisterous and mostly male onlookers, many of them carrying cameras, stayed on the sidewalk because they hadn’t obtained a demonstration permit to walk in the street. About a thousand people gathered as the march passed through Monument Square, a mix of demonstrators, supporters, onlookers and those just out enjoying a warm and sunny early-spring day.
After the marchers reached Tommy’s Park in the Old Port, some turned around and walked back to Longfellow Square, but most stayed and mingled in the park. Some happily posed for pictures.
Police said there were no incidents and no arrests – nudity is illegal in Maine only if genitals are displayed.
Ty McDowell, who organized the march, said she was “enraged” by the turnout of men attracted to the demonstration. The purpose, she said, was for society to have the same reaction to a woman walking around topless as it does to men without shirts on.
However, McDowell said she plans to organize similar demonstrations in the future and said she would be more “aggressive” in discouraging oglers.
Does this not just sum up everything that is wrong with feminism today? Today’s feminists don’t fight for actual equality or gender rights, like voting or not being discriminated against in the workplace (the phony “pay gap” frequently touted by feminists doesn’t count, because it isn’t real). They “fight” for useless things. Take abortion, one of feminism’s most sacred “rights”. Well, abortion is legal, but are feminists satisfied? Of course not! It has to be taxpayer funded and every woman should be getting abortions. It isn’t good enough to be able to choose — women must be actively choosing abortion in greater and greater numbers while government funding likewise increases. They “fight” for the ability of women to sleep around like horndogs with no consequences whatsoever. They advocate one-night-stands and meaningless hook-ups, but frown upon abstinence and commitments. Nevermind that it’s perfectly legal to sleep with as many people as you want — there are just consequences. Maybe it’s getting pregnant, maybe it’s getting an STD, maybe it’s getting an awful reputation. What feminists want is no consequences.
Feminism is all about fighting for things that don’t. actually. matter.
Take this protest, for example. Why was it even needed? It’s legal for both men and women to walk topless down the street. So what was the point? What major social change would be brought about by women parading topless down the street?
The answer is that there is no real social change being sought. Feminists are beginning to feel less and less relevant. After all, the fight is by and large won. So feminists need to find more and more ridiculous reasons to feel relevant, powerful, and needed. The “right” to bare breasts without men ogling is a ridiculous notion. If a woman was walking topless down the street in my hometown, I can guarantee you that I’d gawk too. It’s kind of an attention-getter. What feminists are fighting for is no longer equal rights. They want to be just like men — heck, they want to be superior to men.
Feminists are finding out that they have nothing left to fight for. And so now, they’re having to find new, outrageous ways to shock the public and feel important. This is what happens when 1960s radicals realize they are irrelevant and unneeded. Pathetic, isn’t it?
Ah, you gotta' love liberals! Protesting is, by definition, a way to get noticed, right? So, these ladies are trying to get noticed while not being noticed, and they're angry that they got noticed. Got it? Of course, if they didn't want to be noticed in the first place, why protest at all…? Oh, silly me, these are liberals, and thus it doesn't need to make sense.
Yes, indeed, pathetic. But fun to watch.
There's my two cents.
