Following up on the previous post about Bowe Bergdahl, the more we learn the worse it gets.
The White House seems to be genuinely overwhelmed by the furious backlash from the notion of trading five terrorist leaders for an America-hating deserter. Go figure, huh? It’s somewhat surprising that such competent manipulators would have so completely missed what the public reaction was going to be. It’s so bad that Bergdahl’s hometown even canceled the welcome home party for him. I’m sure it’s not over, either, especially if the promised investigation moves forward.
But back to the desertion. After Bergdahl was gone, the soldiers on base were instructed to keep quiet about it. Even though he was clearly voluntarily shirking his duty, attempts were made to bring him back in. Tragically, fourteen soldiers were lost searching for Bergdahl after he deserted, prompting the absolutely justifiable question asked by one of their gold star moms:
“This guy was worth my son’s life?”
It’s heart-breaking because the answer is, unequivocally, no.
Perhaps mind-bogglingly, the Obama administration is now considering another swap:
As controversy grows over the release of five hardened Taliban detainees in exchange for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the Obama administration is considering springing yet another prisoner from Guantanamo Bay.
Al-Awda has been held prisoner for 12 years. According to Defense Department officials and his official Guantanamo detainee profile, he traveled from his home in Kuwait to Afghanistan just before the 9/11 attacks to train in terrorist camps, and “possibly” fight alongside the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
Al-Awda maintains he only went to Afghanistan for “humanitarian reasons to provide alms for the poor and to teach the Koran.”
Riiiiiiight. Alms for the poor. Mm-hmmm.
Barack Obama is not a stupid man. One does not win the Presidency twice by being stupid. Looking at all of his foreign policy and national security blunders and pronouncements, I think there is only one rationale way to explain his foreign and national security policy without relying on him being stupid. Barack Obama has decided the best way to make the world a safer place is to make America a less safe place. If we must be worried about the shadows and random dictatorships with nukes, we will be less bold in pursuing our own interests. To Barack Obama that’s a good thing.
He freed five terrorists from GTMO to deflect from the V.A. scandal and now it turns out the terrorists were exchanged for a soldier who deserted his platoon and, according to his colleagues, might have tried to collaborate with the terrorists.
But there is more. We know for certain that Barack Obama violated the law in making the trade for Bergdahl. He failed to notify the Congress. But here is the thing we on the right must be mindful of — he did so intentionally as a 2014 gambit.
As I have said repeatedly, the only way Barack Obama thinks he can mitigate the damage coming in November is to inflame his base, particularly black voters. Having Republicans start beating the drums for impeachment does exactly that.
Since the Republicans are cowards, they’ll never push through with an actual impeachment. Even if they did, Harry Reid has proven over and over that he’s willing to chuck all semblance of moral, ethical, and legal standards just to push whatever agenda Obama wants in the Senate. And, with the media solidly on their side, it’ll ultimately look like the Republicans are vindictive racists (or something like that), and end up backfiring. This is a tactic that will only work if it actually succeeds, but with the current crop of Republicans it simply cannot. Thus:
Republicans who beat the drum for impeachment are only playing to the Democrats’ hand.
Here’s an alternative suggestion:
Instead, ride the storm, highlight the offense, and after we have the Senate and House recreate the Iran-Contra hearings. Remind the Democrats of Congress’s power of oversight. … But by God we can restore the military’s faith in civilian rule and uncover exactly why this President seems so intent to treat terrorists in Afghanistan better than conservatives in America.
Time will tell.
There’s my two cents.
